Helms College offers new students and returning students the opportunity to apply for scholarships to assist with the costs of their programs of study. Merit-based scholarships are available to students who have excelled academically. Need-based scholarships are available to students who have exhausted their financial aid eligibility and require assistance with covering program costs. Scholarships are also available to those who have served in the United States Armed Forces, and employees of Edgars Hospitality Group.
Funding for all scholarships is provided through the Tuition Assistance Program and all scholarships are administered through Helms College Financial Aid Office. Scholarships are based on the availability of funding.
Helms College
Distinguished Student AwardThese merit-based scholarships are established to provide assistance with tuition and fees to students who have excelled academically and have demonstrated a commitment to excellence through the pursuit of additional education and training. The applicant must have Demonstrated Academic Excellence such as high college entrance scores such as Scholastic Level Exam Scores, high-Grade Point Average from high school, and excellent Grade Point Average in the program of study at the College. Those who successfully completed the GED Program and achieved exceptional GED scores may also apply for this scholarship.
Helms College Distinguished Award recipients are eligible to receive an initial award of $500.00 and prorated awards at each quarter/payment period based on the number of credit hours/clock hours in their program of study. This award is designated for new students and is renewable up to the maximum number of terms to complete the program of study as determined by the course catalog. Students will not be eligible for this funding for courses that must be repeated. Maximum award amounts are outlined below.
- 6+ Quarter Programs of Study: $2,000
- 4 Quarter Programs of Study: $1,500
- 3 Quarter Programs of Study: $1,000
The Helms College Distinguished Student Award is renewable. In order to maintain eligibility for this award, students must meet the following criteria:
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
- Maintain 90% attendance in all courses.
- Maintain full-time enrollment.
- Remain in good standing with Helms College.
Edgar J. Helms
Memorial ScholarshipThis scholarship is established in honor of Dr. Edgar J. Helms, the founder of Goodwill Industries, who devoted his life to creating opportunities for individuals to better themselves through skill development accompanied by a solid work ethic. This need-based scholarship provides financial assistance to students who have demonstrated academic success at Helms College and need financial resources to cover the cost of education.
To qualify for this scholarship, the applicant must have exhausted all federal financial aid, including the Federal Pell Grant, Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, and PLUS Loans, as applicable. The applicant must also maintain satisfactory academic progress and demonstrate commitment to achieving educational goals.
This scholarship is a one-time award applied to the student’s account during the last term of enrollment. The award amount ranges from $500 – $1,500 and cannot generate a credit balance on the student’s account or be used to cover costs associated with courses that are taken more than once.

Military Service AwardIn recognition of the service provided by the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces, Helms College offers this award in support of the educational goals of enlisted, retired, and former military personnel, spouses, and dependents, whose cost of education is not fully covered by Veteran Assistance Educational Benefits. Application for this scholarship must be supported with proof of current military status or previous military service with Honorable Discharge. This scholarship is a $1000.00 one-time award applied to the student’s account during the student’s 1st term of enrollment.

Presidential AwardThis scholarship is awarded to employees of Edgar’s Hospitality Group who exhibit the values of Service, Ownership, Accountability, and Respect (SOAR) and commit to pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree program in a hospitality discipline at Helms College.
