Helms College Welcomes Veterans

You may know Helms College’s proven programs in culinary arts. What you may not know are the advantages available to those of you who are making the transition from military life to a new career.  Helms Career Institute’s Culinary Arts Diploma Program is approved for enrollment of persons eligible to receive education benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Admissions and financial aid application procedures for veterans and other persons eligible to receive VA education benefits are the same as those for other students.

Financing Your Education

The Post-9/11 GI Bill. Under this bill, up to 100% of veterans' undergraduate tuition & fees would be paid directly to the school in which they enroll. Veterans that are 100% eligible will receive $17,500 per school year. These limitations also apply to transferee spouses of active duty service members. Eligibility requirements:

  • You served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months.
  • You were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001.
  • You are a dependent who is eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran's service under the eligibility criteria listed above.

Financial aid options: HC offers a full range of federal, state, and institutional aid in the form of grants, loans, merit- and need-based scholarships for those who qualify. If you will need financial aid to help cover the cost of your education, you must apply for it. Click here for tips.

Year-round entry dates: You can start a Helms College education whenever you're ready to make your transition. The college offers four enrollment seasons—winter, spring, summer/early fall, and late fall—with a total of 16 entry dates. Many career changers like you choose to enroll in the winter or spring.  

For Military Spouses: Helms College remains committed to the education of military members and their spouses. We’re an approved school for the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) program. With MyCAA, military spouses can receive up to $4,000 in financial assistance for licenses, certificates, certifications or Associates Degrees (Excluding General Studies and Liberal Arts) necessary for gainful employment in high demand, high growth portable career fields.

More about MyCAA:  The Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts Program (MyCAA) is a career development and employment assistance program sponsored by the Department of Defense. MyCAA helps military spouses pursue licenses, certificates, certifications or Associate’s Degrees (excluding General Studies and Liberal Arts) necessary for gainful employment in high demand, high growth portable Career Fields.

Eligibility

  • Spouses of Active Duty Service Members
  • Pay Grade E – 1 to E – 5, W – 1 to W – 2, and O – 1 to O – 2
  • Will complete education coursework while spouse is on Active Duty Title 10 Orders
  • Includes spouses of activated National Guard and Reserve components in pay grades

How Does MyCAA Work?
Military spouses can request MyCAA Financial Assistance (FA) up to a maximum benefit of $4,000. Prior to requesting MyCAA Financial Assistance, military spouses are required to develop an Education and Training (E&T) Plan and upload it to their MyCAA account for approval by a MyCAA Career and Education Consultant.
Required course Information includes:

  • Correct name of school and campus location
  • All courses (Or the block of study) for which MyCAA financial assistance will be used (Include course name/title/codes)

How to Get Started

You can establish a MyCAA account by visiting the MyCAA website.

Once your profile information is provided, MyCAA will verify eligibility through a real-time DEERS eligibly check. If you are eligible, you can create your Career and Training Plan and request Financial Assistance when you are within 90 days of your course start date.
