Academic Advising & Mentors
Academic advising is an on-going process that helps students to develop and achieve their educational, career, and personal goals and to achieve success in their classes. Academic advising is provided by the career advisor assigned by the Dean of Student Services for each diploma and certificate program offered. In addition, each Helms College student is assigned a career advisor who will provide comprehensive educational coaching and personal counseling services for students. Career advisors serve as mentors who monitor students’ progress, ensure that students receive support in their classes as needed, and address personal and life issues that may present barriers to student success in their programs of study.
The goal of the Helms College Mentor Program is to provide individual, outside support, for students throughout their training program and transition into a new job. The program matches Helms students with a volunteer from the local community to provide additional support outside of the traditional college faculty and academic advisors. The mentee will receive support from someone that is emotionally invested in their success through bi-weekly face-to-face meetings and weekly contact by phone or email. The mentor program is designed to provide a unique opportunity for Helms students to have a connection to the community while at the same time gaining the additional guidance and support to help them become a successful graduate.
